Brief History

1964    -    The name of Rangoon University Library was changed to Universities’ Central Library under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education.
1927    -    Yangon University Library original building built.
1973    -    A new building for Universities’ Central Library was constructed adjacent to the Yangon University Library’s original building.
1980    -    The new building for UCL was completed.
1987    -    Universities’ Central Library and Yangon University Library were separated. Yangon University Library was re-established in the original building under the Rector of University of Yangon.
1992    -    Another three storeyed building connected with the Universities’ Central Library main building was constructed.
        UCL has the largest collection of books, palm-leaf and parabike manuscripts in Myanmar. It leads all universities and colleges libraries. The collections of UCL are mainly for research and reference.

    Currently the number of staff in UCL is (43) permanent staff and (31) daily wage workers.

Loan Services

 Teaching staff can borrow up to 5 books at a time for a loan period of one month.
 Students can borrow up to 5 books at a time for 2 weeks.
 Researchers & other scholars can borrow 2 books at a time for 2 weeks.

Electronic Books and Journals

 Many full text databases are available provided by Open Society Foundation.
 Also available Journal of Burma Research Society (JBRS) complete set of 59 vols. in full text (1911-1977); Proceedings of 1st. to 10th. Congress of Southeast Asian Librarian (CONSAL), Disserations on ASEAN with their abstracts in electronic form and easily searchable with our Library Automation System.
